Jubilee Scholarship Fund Empowering the Marginalized

The Need:The Tribal State of Jharkhand was created on November 15, 2000 with the specific object of developing this one of the most backward states of our Country. It has 24 districts with a population of 26.91 million, as per the Census of 2001. The State has 3,32,620 villages with 28,389 schools. It is the single richest region in mineral resources and forest wealth, but the poorest according to all development indicators in the field of Health, Education, Agriculture, and Socio-Economic Development.

Although education has been made compulsory for all children within the age group of 6-14 years in the Country, but in spite of all efforts by the Government including the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, efforts by Christian missions and other NGOs, the literacy rate is only 59.5%. Further, 53% of girls in the age-group 5-9 are illiterate. One survey of Jharkhand reveals that 3.5 million children in this State do not attend any school. The net result is that very few go to the college level. Similarly, for want of skill-development opportunities, unemployment is rampant among the youth.

Poverty, it has been well understood, is the main reason why children do not attend school. Even those who take admission at primary levels are not able to reach matriculation for lack of money. The number of school drop-outs is increasing.

The Response:The Diocese of Jamshedpur is celebrating its 50 years of service to the people of Jharkhand and West Bengal, especially in the districts of Singhbhum East, Singhbhum West, Dhanbad, Seraikela-Kharsawan, and Purulia. The Christian community is very actively involved in both urban and rural education. On the occasion of its Golden Jubilee, the Diocese has decided to establish a Golden Jubilee Scholarship Fund to provide scholarship to the children coming from economically weaker background, without ant distinction of caste or creed or race, to pursue primary, middle, secondary, college, and technical education.

The Management:The Scholarship Fund will go a long way to meet the aforestated objectives. However, the desired Scholarship Fund could not be created without the cooperation and support from men and women of goodwill. It was, therefore, decided to create the Corpus of the Scholarship Fund by way of donations, grants, and contributions received from individuals, schools, institutions, corporate or from any other legal entities. Any individual/corporate donating Rs. 5 lakhs and above may request for the Scholarship to be named after the name of their kins/company. All moneys received will be deposited in a scheduled bank in the form of Fixed Deposit.
